ISLAMABAD - Lawmakers would discuss the capacity of Election Commission of Pakistan for conducting the upcoming elections in the country.

This was decided in the National Assembly Standing Committee on Parliamentary Affairs meeting here on Tuesday.

The Committee unanimously decided that the next meeting would be convened on 19 July, 2016 and the capacity of Election Commission of Pakistan for conducting the upcoming elections in the country, would be discussed in detail.

Additional Secretary, Election Commission (ECP) briefed lawmakers regarding salaries, allowances and perks and privileges of Election Commission members.

The Committee unanimously recommended and passed “The Members of Election Commission (Salary, Allowances, Perks & Privileges) Bill, 2016, as introduced in the National Assembly, for further action.

The Committee members were apprised by the Joint Secretary, Ministry of Finance that salaries of the ECP members as announced by Finance Minister in the budget speech would be considered accordingly.

The committee members also recommended installing security cameras in the Parliament Lodges, and to make the already installed cameras operational.

It also recommended that security issues would be further discussed with the Speaker, during the upcoming session of the National Assembly.

The members expressed dissatisfaction over the security arrangements and annoyance over lethargy of police personnel in controlling increasing trend of theft cases in the Parliament Lodges.

Recently, thieves broke into the flat of PML-N leader Talal Chaudhary in Parliament Lodges, and managed to escape after looting all valuables from there.

The Elections Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2014 was also discussed along with the Representation of the People (Amendment) Bill, 2014.

The Committee was informed that since issues have already been discussed in the Electoral Reforms Committee, therefore, the lawmakers decided to withdraw the said Bill.
