LAHORE - The Punjab Assembly on Monday witnessed rare scene of adjournment of session without taking up single item on agenda due to lack of quorum.
As the treasury failed to ensure presence of required number of legislators in the House after ringing of bells for five minutes and then even after 15 minutes break, the chair adjourned the session till Tuesday afternoon.
Unlike usual routine of almost two-hour delays, the session started only 20 minutes behind the scheduled time with Speaker Ch Parvez Elahi in the chair. After recitation from the Holy Quran and Naat, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz legislator Tahir Khalil Sandhu pointed quorum. As there were only three legislators in the House, the chair directed ringing bells for five minutes. As the quorum was incomplete even after five minutes, the chair announced 15 minutes break.
On counting after 15 minutes break, there were only 10 lawmakers in the House including four from the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf and three each from its coalition partner Pakistan Muslim League Quaid-e-Azam and the Opposition party the PML-N. As there were little chances of getting the required number of legislators in the House, the chair adjourned the session till Tuesday afternoon.
