KARACHI - Violent riots continued on Thursday at various localities in the metropolis against power outage as Karachiites have been suffering more than 8-hour long loadshedding in a day. People spent sleepless night due to the mid night loadshedding while a KESC sub-station in Lyari near Khadda Market caught fire after several blasts due to overloading. Sources said that loud blast occurred at the Khadda Market Lyari sub-station following by fire. Four fire tenders reached the spot and controlled fire after hectic efforts of an hour. The operation department immediately disconnected the electricity supply to the area which could not be restored till the filing of this story creating severe problems for local residents. The sub-station was completely gutted and it would take three to four days to restore power supply in the area. While citizens in some other localities including Musa Lane, Chakivara, Baghdadi, and Methadar had also suffered untold hardships due to power failure prompting the residents to resort to violent protest. The angry mob attacked the KESC customers centre at Musa Lane and smashed furniture and tortured the employees. They also blocked main Korangi Road for several hours by burning tyres in protest over 10-hour long loadshedding. KESC sources further told that an underground cable burst suddenly due to overloading and employees were tackling the situation but facing problems due to violent protest from the angry residents. The citizens have complained that they have been facing prolonged power outage since last three days and spent sleepless nights but KESC did nothing to rectify the problem.
