His democratic right

Dr Fareeha Khanum in her letter to The Nation on May 19 has criticized Imran Khan for ignoring Wazirastan and directing his anger at MQM. Imran Khan is not alone in thinking that the whole mess has been created by Musharraf's decision to join Bush in a war against the Pakistan-friendly Taliban. I agree with him that use of brute force, at the behest of US, may solve the problem in the short term but will give rise to much bigger problems in the long run. Since May 12, 2007, Imran Khan has been trying to go to Karachi to commiserate with his party men who had suffered injuries at the hands of the MQM activists. Each time, Imran has been barred from going to Karachi by the 'democratic' MQM government. Should he remain silent in the face of this illegal and immoral ban on him and shouldn't he keep trying to go to Karachi? How does this become 'his pet peeve'? Actually, because of his bold challenge to the mafia Don, he has become the pet punching bag of the MQM supporters. -KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, via e-mail, June 2.
