Due to slower melting of the glaciers and lack of rain in the catchment areas of the rivers, the water situation in the country has become very precarious. To meet the Kharif requirements the outflows at the dams are exceeding the inflows and reservoir level are dropping. The level at Tarbela dam is only 10 feet above the dead level, enough only for 10 days. Similar is the position at Mangla dam. The need for more storage capacity cannot be overstressed particularly in view of Indian designs on our rivers. The authorities must heed the calls by an informed section of Media to immediately start the construction of Kalabagh Dam. KHURSHID ANWER, Lahore, June 10.
