MANDI BAHAUDDIN - DCO Imtiaz Niazi has said that universal salt iodisation (USI) is the best way to eliminate iodine deficiency disorders (IDD) in human beings and pledged to promote active cooperation among government and private sector for success of iodine supplementation programmes in the district.

He expressed these views during Iodine Deficiency Disorder Control Committee (IDDCC) meeting here the other day.

The meeting was attended by the officers of health, education, community development, social welfare departments and representatives of local NGOs.

EDO Health Amjad Iqbal presented the progress of USI Program in district and shared achievements and challenges which were faced by the Health Department during program implementation.

The DCO appreciated the efforts of the EDO Health. DO Health Dr Zia Ullah Siddiqui and District Focal Person for USI Program Mushtaq Ahmed and his field team.

He also came to know by observing district USI data which indicated raise of 96 per cent adequately iodized salt production in district up to April 2014 from 48 per cent in January 2014.

Later, the EDO Health told that it was difficult to make district produce and sustain 100 per cent iodized edible salt without support and cooperation of other departments in implementation of USIP in the district.
