Gareth Bale powers Wales closer to Euro 2016

Wales claimed an all important win against the World’s second best side, Belgium, in the European qualifiers on Friday. The win helped Wales regain top spot in their Euro 2016 qualifying group. It seems that The Dragons are on course to end their 57 year absence from major tournaments by finally qualifying in Europe’s elite competition.

It was a special game for Gareth Bale who was representing his national side for the 50th time. The Real Madrid powerhouse, marked the special occasion in style by scoring the winner in consummate calm after Belgium defender Radja Nainggolan misdirected his header.

Belgium dominated proceedings throughout the night but were frustrated by a rather disciplined and brave Welsh defense at a very enthusiastic Cardiff City stadium.

Belgium had arguably the best chances of the night right from the start thanks to their fluid and free flowing attack. Nainggolan had his curling effort well saved by Welsh keeper, Wayne Hennessey, before the Belgium captain and Chelsea midfield maestro, Eden Hazard, volleyed over the bar.

Wales struggled holding the ball but on the 25 minute mark, thanks to a half cleared Aaron Ramsey free kick, Gareth Bale coolly slotted the ball in the net through Courtois’s legs to help Wales take the lead.

In the second half, the added physical presence of Belgium substitute and prolific Everton striker, Romelu Lukaku, helped Belgium control the game. With a whopping 65% possession in the whole match, Belgium came close to scoring via a series of chances. Kevin De Bruyne narrowly missed the target while Eden Hazard and Christian Benteke’s efforts were well blocked by the stubborn Welsh defense.

Wales were lucky to grab all three points on the night even though they were underdogs for most of the game. They had 35% possession, shot 6 times compared to Belgium’s 18 efforts out of which only 2 were on target.
