LAHORE - The newly-appointed Punjab Industrial Estates Development and Management Company chairman allegedly attempted to bribe the Board of Directors to make them approve new luxury vehicle for his personal usage besides two other vehicles for his security staff, The Nation learnt.

Reliable sources confided to this reporter that PIEDMC Chairman Tahir Javed Malik allegedly attempted to get approved his plan in his maiden meeting of the company’s BoD. They informed that the new chairman, for the first time in the PIEDMC history, offered TA/DA along with Rs10,000 allowance for attending the BoD meeting, (directors - all wealthy industrialists and owner of renowned companies). The directors, however, flatly refused ‘this offer’ as there is no such precedent in the PIEDMC history.

“In fact, the second proposal was to get approved vehicles for the personal use of the chairman. But the chairman could not present this suggestion due to refusal of earlier proposal,” the sources pointed out.

According to the sources privy to the development, the chairman demanded the Acting PIEDMC CEO to provide him the vehicles and protocol staff in return for regularisation of his (CEO) services. But the acting CEO Col (r) Naveed Mushtaq Gill, who wanted to be regularised, is not in a position to grant the vehicles and protocol staff, advised him to take up the issue at the BoD meeting. He also advised him to first offer them (directors) TA/DA and other perks and then try to get the vehicles approved for himself,” the sources claimed, adding that much to the annoyance of the new chairman, he could not succeed in his attempt to bribe the directors with perks and other privileges.

It is to be noted that new PIEDMC Chairman Tahir Javed Malik runs various large scale and medium sized companies and is a former senior vice president of LCCI and former chairman of the PIAF.

The sources claimed that the directors are of the view that it would be embarrassing for them (who are well-off rather billionaires) to get nominal allowance for attending the BoD meeting. “It will be rather an insult for the directors to make any such demand,” the sources cited them as to have said. The sources informed that no chairman or director in the history of the company has ever get any kind of allowance and vehicles for his personal use from the company.

According to sources, several other agenda items were also deferred by the directors to the next BoD meeting as legal procedure was not adopted by the new chairman. The meeting usually discuss previous meeting minutes which is circulated to the directors along with the agenda for the upcoming meeting. The directors said that they have not been circulated the working paper and minutes of the last meeting, so they cannot discuss the issues in details. Resultantly, several matters were postponed for the next meeting.

It is to be noted that back in 2003, the Punjab Government established the Punjab Industrial Estates Development and Management Company (PIEDMC) with the objective to materialise its vision of industrial development.
