KARACHI - Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani has said the Pakistan Navy apart from defending sea frontiers of the country is fully committed to peace and stability of the entire region. The prime minister arrived on Pakistan Navy Ship Nasr on Saturday to witness the naval exercises AMAN-11 at deep Indian Ocean. Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir hosted the occasion. Chief of Army Staff Gen Ashfaq Pervaz Kayani, Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff Committee Gen Khalid Shamim Wynne, and Air Chief Rao Qaimar Suleman, Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah and other high-ups were present. Speaking on the occasion, the prime minister said holding of such mega exercise is manifestation of Pakistans resolve to serve for regional stability. He said that it was also invigorating that Pakistan Navy efforts are being acknowledged by the world community. Commenting on the maritime threat, PM Gilani said that the vastness and interconnectivity of high seas makes it possible for the non-state actors to engage in transport crime and it must be thwarted at all costs. To achieve this, the seafaring nations need to collaborate and assist each other to safeguard the common interests. Therefore, he added the navies always played a pivotal role in bringing harmony and prosperity to respective regions. Talking to the media, he reiterated the importance of deep-rooted friendship with China. The Sino-Pak cooperation exists in all sectors and Pakistan values this partnership. Responding to a question, the prime minister said that Pakistan being on an important strategic location has an important role to play in the region and continuous participation in war against terrorism bears testimony to this reality. Despite all the resource constraints, the government is making all endeavours to meet the essential requirements of the security forces. To another question, he dignitary said, The strategic partnership with the US continues the country we as a responsible nation would make all efforts for its sustenance. Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Noman Bashir in his welcome address shed light on salient features of the exercise. He termed it as an important step towards increased participation from friendly countries round the world not only in the field of defence but also socially and culturally. He expressed his entire satisfaction on the conduct of AMAN-11 and hoped that this would prove beneficial in devising common Standing Operating Procedures and improvise maritime tactics. The prime minister witnessed different operational exercises conducted by participating naval platforms, including anti-piracy operation by the Special Forces, surface-to-surface firing on pre-determined targets and replenishment at sea. PM Gilani witnessed an impressive flypast by various aircrafts and helicopters. All participating ships Skim past PNS Nasr in a column formation and presented salute to the dignitary. All the coalition ships also formed up for traditional AMAN Formation to signify unity and harmony among participating the nation against seaward crimes and terrorism. Agencies add: Answering to a question, Gilani said that the constitutional role of all institutions was fixed and there will be no conflict between the institutions because they will be adjusted in due time. Answering another question, Gilani said that he also belongs to Karachi but had appointed Interior Minister Rehman Malik to deal with issues relating to the city. Commenting on the province-wide strike observed by the PPP in Sindh against the removal of Chairman NAB, Gilani said that he respects the mandate of all parties and will not interfere in their matters.
