KARACHI - Lawyers, on the call of Pakistan Bar Council, observed black day in protest on Monday against the May 12 mayhem but failed to show handsome strength in general body meetings and rallies. Lawyers' fraternity, civil society organisations and political parties observed black day and recorded their protest against May 12 carnage in Karachi last year. The legal fraternity started the day with general body meetings in Karachi Bar Association (KBA), Sindh High Court Bar Association (SHCBA) and Malir Bar Association and also took out a rally along with Jamat-e-Islami leaders. But lack of enthusiasm and unity was witnessed during the general body meetings and the rally as a very small number of lawyers attended were present on the occasion.  It is worth mentioning here that high security measures were taken near High Court and City Court buildings as heavy contingents of police along with officials of secret agencies were deployed on the route of the rally. Police installed barricades and didn't allow lawyers to park vehicles on the road near Shuhda-e-Punjab Hall at the city court.  A general body meeting of the KBA was held where Jamat-e-Islami leader Liaqaut Baloch, President KBA Mehmoodul Hassan and general secretary Naeem Qaureshi addressed the lawyers. Speaking on the occasion, Liaqaut Baloch said that today it has been confirmed that our decision to boycott the election was correct as no transparent polls were possible under military dictator. He said that government is going to impose ban on the coverage of lawyers struggle despite its tall claims regarding freedom of media. Baloch further said that present government has failed to restore the judges. He strongly condemned that government has made alliance with culprits involved in May 12 mayhem. President KBA Mehmoodul Hassan said lawyers' movement was not against any individual but against the system. He added deposed CJP Iftikhar Chaudhry is just like railway engine who want to bring the judicial train on the freedom station. He strongly condemned the May 12 incident and said that no terrorist act could break the commitment of lawyers for the restoration of judiciary and the struggle would continue till the reinstatement of judges. Naeem Qureshi said the President House was hatching conspiracy against the lawyers' movement and creating hurdles in the restoration of judges. He added that all deposed judges could be reinstated through an executive order and there was no need to bring any constitutional package for this purpose.  After the general body meeting, the KBA members along with JI workers took out a rally from Shuhda-e-Punjab Hall to Karachi Press Club. Addressing the participant of the rally, President SHCBA Rashid Rizvi said that lawyers of Karachi have proved that shameless incidents of May 12, March 9 and November 3 couldn't stop their movement for the reinstatement of deposed judges. He also paid rich tributes to the martyrs of May 12 and said that the sacrifice of the people, killed and injured in 12 May mayhem, would never be forgotten. Rizvi further said that Sherry Rehman had forgotten May 12 mayhem when her car was come under fire and several people died in that incident. Meanwhile, a general body meeting was also held at SCHBA to commemorate the May 12 incident and lawyers completely boycott the court proceedings. Rashid Rizvi said that establishment couldn't halt the ongoing struggle of lawyers for the reinstatement of judges adding that lawyers' leaders would announce their future strategy on May 17 and launch long march.
