Surprisingly, I have not heard a word from the government on the illegal imposition of Jaziya on Sikhs by the Taliban. Why is government allowing a state within a state to collect such a tax that has no place in the constitution of Pakistan? Inaction on such issues by the government encourages extremists to nibble at writ of the government piecemeal. If allowed to do all this, the militants would ultimately turn into a huge monster that cannot be controlled by civil means and then the military force has to be used to wrest the situation. A case in point is Lal Masjid where the issue was allowed to grow out of hand and when brought under control earned a bad name for the army for killing its own people. Will the government, therefore, please act and come to the rescue of our Pakistani Sikh brethren in the affected areas where they have been living peacefully for centuries. They are faced with the dire situation of being forced to migrate to safer areas leaving behind their hearths and homes along with their prosperous businesses there. Is this the future Quaid-e-Azam had assured them of? -COL (Retd) RIAZ JAFRI, Rawalpindi, via e-mail, May 3.
