KARACHI  - There is a need to lay due emphasis on research in medical teaching and training, said Bahria University Medical and Dental College Rector Shahid Iqbal while speaking at an inauguration ceremony of the institution’s symposium as its chief guest.He was of the view that in the developing countries like ours, research should not be neglected in the medical teaching and training. Admiral Shahid Iqbal stressed that there should be due emphasis on the scientific inquiry in our secondary and higher secondary school levels. He pointed out that the world has moved into an evidence based era in almost all fields. Admiral Shahid Iqbal was of the view that we need our medical practitioners to generate research data specific to our country. He also suggested that there should be required modification and restructuring of our medical education system developed on research based teaching and training.This will also help us in strengthening our infrastructure and research, he added.On the occasion, Prof. Dr. Zia ul Islam presented the vote of thanks.There were two plenary lectures by the eminent researchers’ Prof. Dr. Waseem Jafri and Dr. Huma Qureshi. Dr. Huma Qureshi, Executive Director of Pakistan Medical Research Council, said that there should be an active process to incorporate the researches into the health policies and policies should also be made according to priorities in our country.In our country improvement is needed in technical and financial cooperation, sharing resources, equipment and facilities and public private partnership. Prof. Dr. Waseem Jaffri, Associate Dean and Chairman Department of Continuous Professional Education, spoke about the importance of critical thinking in medical education. He said that the Islamic contribution to science had been enormous and specifically to health. The symposium’s inaugural session was attended by a large number of the students, faculty members of BUMDC and PNS  Shifa, medical educators and researchers of different institutes.The theme of the two-day moot was “Research-oriented education and training”.The welcome address was presented by the Principal of Bahria University Medical and Dental College and Chairman Organizing Committee, Prof. Dr. Syed Tipu Sultan.
