islamabad - First Lady Begum Kalsoom Nawaz Tuesday inaugurated state-of-the-art Pakistan Thalassaemia Centre established by Pakistan Bait-ul-Mal’s (PBM) here at Fatima Jinnah Park.

Speaking on the occasion, she expressed the government’s resolve to take every possible step for controlling the disease in the country by providing medical assistance to the thalassaemia patients.

Kalsoom Nawaz said the centre would be helpful for the children suffering from thalassaemia as they needed continued special medical care.

She said thalassaemia was one of the inherited diseases, which was transmitted to the kids from their parents. “If the mother or father carried symptoms of thalassaemia in her or his blood then the child might be thalassaemia minor patient.

In case both the parents were thalassaemia carrier then the child would be a thalassaemia major patient,” she added.

She stressed that both men and women should have their blood tests before marriage.

She said it was a high time to create awareness among the people about preventive measures through proper counseling by service providers.
