The district administration is considering a proposal to change the venue for upcoming public meetings to be held by political parties in connection with PP-196 by-election as they will be asked to hold their election shows at Sports Ground instead of Railway Ground for security reasons. This was disclosed by the District Coordination Officer Zahid Saleem Gondal while addressing the participants of a meeting held in connection with the by-election on Tuesday. He further revealed that the security agencies had declared Railway unsafe and therefore all political parties were being asked to hold their public gatherings at Sports Ground.

He said that the district administration would stay fully impartial in light of orders of Election Commission and offer full security to all candidates so that they could run their campaign freely. He said that all out measures would be adopted for the implementation of election code of conduct while the security of polling stations and candidates on election day would also be ensured.

He disclosed that the new election code of conduct prohibited outsiders, political leaders or public office holders from running election campaign of others in by election and only candidates were allowed to hold political activity. He urged upon all the candidates to run their campaign while staying within the limits of election code of conduct so that controversies and clashes could be averted.

Speaking on this occasion, the CPO Ch. Saleem said that police would adopt strict measures on Election Day to avert any untoward incident. He declared that there would be a ban on displaying signs, banners or flags of any party within 100 yards radius of polling stations.

Later on, the District Returning Officer read out the code of conduct to all candidates.

Meanwhile, the DCO, CPO and other officials visited Sports Ground to review arrangements for the public meetings. They directed the officials concerned to mark entrance and exit points clearly.

SAFETY CODE AT METRO PROJECT: Keeping in view a recent accident at Multan Metro Bus Project site in which a worker lost his life, the Commissioner Multan Division Asad Ullah Khan directed all construction companies to adopt all measures and ensure implementation of code of conduct for the security of public and labour.

The Chief Engineer of the project Sabir Khan Saddozai convened a meeting of resident engineers of all companies on Commissioner’s direction on Tuesday and guided them on code of conduct. He directed all the contractors to ensure use of helmets and gloves at work site and direct the labourers to wear yellow jackets with reflector strips on them. “Make arrangements for light at work site and install revolving lights,” he added. He said that no one below the age of 18 should be hired as worker and only professional crane operators should be hired. He further instructed them to store petroleum products in tanks at work site, keep chemicals away from  electric wires and deploy one safety supervisor at the site. “All the contractors are bound to arrange first aid kits, display emergency numbers at the site and safety supervisor must hold a safety register,” he added.
