ISLAMABAD - Pakistan’s longest serving No 1 tennis player Aqeel Khan stormed into the semifinals of Subh-e-Nau National Clay Court Tennis Championship after defeating Mudassar in straight sets in the quarterfinals played here at Senator Dilawar Abbas PTF Tennis Complex on Thursday.

Aqeel was given a real run for his money by Mudassar, a youngster from remote Punjab village who played out his heart but couldn’t beat the experienced Aqeel. The veteran tennis ace broke 10th game of Mudassar in the first set to take it 6-4 in 45 minutes in highly hot and humid conditions.

In the second set, Mudassar displayed top class tennis and hit volleys from the baseline and kept Aqeel on the run throughout the set. But once again when it mattered the most, Mudassar failed to hold onto his serve and lost the second set 4-6, thus Aqeel registered a well-fought win and earned a place in the semifinals where he will take on high-flying Arham Atiq, who won his quarterfinal against Mudassar Murtaza.

Arham made another huge upset on the second day in running as he stunned Usman Rafique in the quarterfinals 6-1, 7-6(4). Fourth seed Davis Cupper Shehzad Khan survived a huge scare against junior Muzammil, winning the encounter 6, 7 (6), 6-2, 6-4. Shehzad will face M Abid in the second semifinal, as Abid defeated Heera Ashiq 7-6(1), 7-5 in the last quarterfinal.

Aman Atique abd Syed Nofil Kaleem qualified for the boys’ U-18 semifinals after winning their respective matches.
