KARACHI: Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) has finalised its plan for lifting the litter and domestic garbage from door to door in the port city of Karachi and this operation would be performed by companies having good reputation and expertise within the country and abroad.
This scheme that would be actualised in coming days would not only keep the world’s one of the mega cities,Karachi a very clean and tidy and environment friendly but would also help provide basic fuel for the production of energy from waste.
SSWMB Managing Director said this during a meeting with Chinese delegation that called on him with regard to opportunities for the investment in solid waste sector in the metropolis. The SSWBD MD had a detailed discussion with the Chinese experts and assured them of full government support in the plans for utelisation of waste and litter that approximately accumulates up to 24, 000 metric tons every day.
Though the waster collecting and liter lifting process would be outsourced to the local and foreign expert companies but the SSWMB would be sole supervising agency in this regard. This would help bring direct foreign investment and dependence on fuel for the energy from abroad would also be lowered down and the locally available stuff would also help save the spending of foreign exchange from the national exchequer, the SSWMB MD said.
Besides being an administrator with good reputation, the SSWMB MD Roshan Ali Shaikh is a competent bureaucrat, who also served the province on different key positions and represented the Sindh provincial government in Asian development Board is expert on certain sections and he has been struggling untiringly for means and sources for the country, province and the masses.
While talking to this scribe, Shaikh said that with the support of the chief executive of the province Syed Qaim Ali Shah and Sindh Local Government Minister Syed Nasir Shah, the SSWMB has been able to come forward with schemes that never existed before.
The investors in Chinese delegation had showed great interest in production of electricity through solid waste and there is no doubt that the city has vast potential to provide the basic fuel for the same.
He said there would no compromise on transparent operations based on solid waste and in order to ensure and maintain complete transparency from top to bottom, special solid waste management magistrates would be appointed for which necessary work has also been completed.
The SSWMB MD Roshan Ali Shaikh said the dumping of the litter on streets especially around air bases has caused irreparable loss to the country’s air force and the plans for making the city litter-free would be a great service to the country’s air force.
He said many countries have utelised the solid waste to meet their needs for energy and the clean and tidy environment is also a key to build the base of tourism, which would soon come true.
Earlier, SSWMB Executive Director Dr A D Sanjnani briefed the Chinese delegation about the SSWMB and Municipal side dealing with litter and garbage.
