KARACHI - Sindh government spokesman and CM Advisor on Law Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Friday said that the Sindh government was doing three things to solve water problems, adding after their completion, 120 million gallons of additional water will be added daily in Karachi.
“The people of Karachi voted in 2018 to abolish the status quo but they could not get the results. The Sindh government has done a lot of development work in Karachi in the last few years,” the administrator said at the Institute of Business Administration here while speaking at a program on “Karachi Agay Barhnay Ka Rasta (Karachi The Way Forward). Dr S Akbar Zaidi, Executive Director, IBA Karachi, Ambassadors of different countries, dignitaries of the city and a large number of students were present on the occasion.
Wahab said that a city which does not know its population, how will you provide water to the people of this city? He said that Karachi gets water from Keenjhar and Hub Dam.
“Karachi gets 550 million gallons of water which is 45 percent of the total consumption. The Sindh government is doing three things that can solve the water problem,” he added. The administrator said, before that 70 million gallons of water came through the canal, the second thing they were trying to do is bring water from Haleji. “The third thing we are doing is working on sea water. We will make it possible to supply water to the citizens through desalination plant,” he added.
Wahab said that we want to start the desalination plant project in Ibrahim Haideri. He said that in our electricity bill, 100 rupees was taken as monthly license fee for PTV, asking why we don’t also collect our taxes from these bills. He said that KMC had decided to get 7 billion 4 crore extra to improve the city but the Federal government stopped. The administrator said that they had digitised the data of parks, petrol pumps, huts and shops and put it on websites “When I took charge in August, I looked at KMC’s assets. From a population of 16.1 million, KMC collects a municipal tax of Rs21 crore. Has someone asked the mayor why you didn’t collect taxes? 9100 shops collect less than Rs100 million in revenue.
