KARACHI - Tension gripped the Quaidabad area when at least eight people, including two journalists of a private TV channel, were injured in a clash between two student organisations here on Sunday. The incident took place at Pakistani Swedish Institute of Technology (PSIT) situated at Quaidabad, in the jurisdiction of Shah Latif Police Station, where activists of rival student organisations opened fire on each other leaving two policemen, a reporter and a cameraman of a private TV channel and four students injured. Witnessed told the members of a student group along with the law enforcers were checking the students entering the institute for entry test for diploma in associate engineering. "The incident took place out of the premises of the institute", PSIT Director Nazeer Ahmed Abro said, adding that some men affiliated with student organisations were creating troubles which resulted in armed clash. "Rangers should be re-deployed at the institute to thwart such incidents in future", he appealed. Some one thousand students and teachers remained besieged in the institute due to intense firing. Later, heavy contingents of police and Rangers arrived to control the situation and freed the students and teachers. SHO Ali Hassan Sheikh said the situation became tense when IJT members present in the institute called their associates. As a result, an armed clash erupted between the outsiders IJT members and Pakhtoon Student Federation (PSF) of the Awami National Party (ANP), he added. "I tried to stop the journalists from entering the institute but they did not follow my instructions and resultantly, sustained bullet wounds", said SHO Sheikh, adding that he rushed them to hospital. Two policemen, two journalists and four members of both organisations were injured in the clash, he said. Sindh Minister for Information Shazia Marri and Jamat-e-Islami leader Nasarullah Shahjee visited the hospital and inquired about the health of injured persons. Capital City Police Officer (CCPO), Wasim Ahmed also visited the hospital and ordered investigation into the incident. He suspended the area SHO Ali Hassan Sheikh or negligence in duty.   Meanwhile, MQM Rabita Committee has condemned the clash between student organisations and demanded for immediate arrest of the responsible people.
