MIRPUR (AJK) - Azad Jammu Kashmir has achieved a major breakthrough in the extensive drive against the environmental pollution after the first high power Incinerator was inaugurated in the state-run Mirpur District Headquarters Hospital for the disposal of medical waste of the local hospitals running both in private and public sectors. Rs2.01 million Incinerator has been installed jointly by the State Health Department and the AJK Environmental Protection Agency with the coordination of the private sector. Director General Environmental Protection Agency AJK Ershaad Ahmed Qureshi and Principal state-run Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Medical College Mirpur Mian Rasheed Ahmed jointly inaugurated the project here late Tuesday by cutting the ribbon of the plant, first of its own kind in AJK, by putting a mile stone in the ongoing endeavours to fight against the environmental pollution. Reporter The inaugural ceremony was attended among others by Medical Superintendent Mirpur DHQ Hospital Dr Mushtaq Ahmed Chaudhry, District Health Officer Dr. Bashir Ahmed Chaudhry, Chairman Environmental Journalists Forum AJK Altaf Hamid Rao, Deputy Director EPA Mirpur Sardar Idrees Mahmood, Assistant Director Raja Rizwan Ullah Khan, Mirpur Private Doctors Association's leaders including Dr. Amin Chaudhry, Dr. Muhammad Akram Khan, Dr. C.M.Hanif, Dr. Riaz Ahmed and others members belonging to the medical fraternity and the NGO's. Earlier addressing the inaugural ceremony, speakers including DG Environment Protection Agency AJK Ershaad Ahmed Qureshi, Medical Superintendent Mirpur DHQ Hospital Dr. Mushtaq Ahmed Chaudhry, District Health Officer Dr. Bashir Ahmed Chaudhry, Deputy Director EPA Mirpur Sardar Idrees Mahmood, ex Chairman MDA Dr. Amin Chaudhry, Dr. Riaz Ahmed and Mian Rasheed Ahmed Principal Benazir Bhutto Shaheed Medical College Mirpur emphasized the need of the individual and collective efforts of all segments of the society to assist the law-enforcing agencies including the department of Environment Protection for bringing fruitful results of the current campaign to ensure the environment of all sorts of pollutions. The said expertise said that the wastages of the hospitals cause the emerging of various epidemics including Hepatitis B and C detrimental to the human health. They said that the installation of the high power incinerator in Mirpur Hospital will help in to the regular complete disposal of dangerous wastages of not only the District Hospital but also those running in the public and private sector in Mirpur city and rest of the district. Speakers called upon the operators of the local private hospitals to ensure the disposal of their wastages through the Mirpur District Hospital Incinerator by assuring their due contribution and national responsibility to make the project complete success for combating the environmental pollution. Speakers called for early formation of Health Regulator Authority in AJK to ensure the smooth and credible functioning of the hospitals in private and public sectors besides to wipe out the menace of quackery which has emerged highly detrimental to the human health.
