'Nawaz would have been killed had he resisted coup

LAHORE (INP) Lt-Gen (r) Ziauddin Butt has said that General (r) Pervez Musharraf had made up his mind to topple Nawaz government, the day he took over as Army Chief. The former head of ISI and the man whose appointment as Army Chief led to the dismissal of Nawaz Sharif government on October 12,1999, said in an interview with a private TV channel on Wednesday, that had Nawaz not shown patience and resisted his governments overthrow, he would have been shot dead. He said Musharraf coup was not a reaction but part of a well thought out strategy. He said after the Kargil incident, Pervez Musharraf was in a hurry to take over the power because he feared that a commission of inquiry would be formed and action would be taken against him on the basis of its report. Ziauddin said that General Musharraf remained scared during the first three months of the coup. He said had the politicians shown a strong reaction and called a meeting against the military rule, Musharraf would not have succeeded in prolonging his rule. He disclosed that Nawaz Sharif was ordered to dissolve the assembly but he did not succumb to the pressure of the Generals. He said that Pervez Musharraf used all tactics to victimise Nawaz during his detention. He was told that Musharraf has decided to hang him.
