Rawalpindi - A large number of jewellers along with their families blocked Murree Road for traffic for about three hours yesterday.

They were staging protest against the police failure to arrest the four dacoits who looted 4-kg gold last week from a jewellery shop at Sarafa Bazaar.

The protesting jewellers torched old tyres on the road and chanted slogans against Federal Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Rawalpindi police for showing negligence in arrest of four dacoits.

According to details, a large number of jewellers along with their family members gathered at Sarafa Bazaar and later marched towards Murree Road while chanting slogans against police and interior minister for not arresting the dacoits. They later staged a massive protest demonstration at Committee Chowk on the call of New Sarafa Bazaar Jewellers Association.

Addressing the protestors, the speakers condemned police and said that dacoity incidents have surged in the limits of police station Banni. They said all the jewellers are feeling insecure and robbers are looting them without any fear.

They demanded the chief minister and IGP Punjab to take action against Rawalpindi police for not solving the case.

Later, SSP (Operations) Karamat Ullah Malik, SP Malik Iqbal and SHO Sadaqat Khan reached the spot and negotiated with the protestors. SSP Karamat told the protestors that police had traced the robbers and would arrest them soon and stuff would be recovered from them. On this assurance, the protestors dispersed peacefully.
