ISLAMABAD - Candidates fielded by the Pakistan Awami Tehrik (PAT) of Dr Tahirul Qadri in the two constituencies (NA-144) and (PP-147) managed to put together 127 votes only.

Results of the two constituencies reveal that the candidates fielded by the PAT in PP-147 (Lahore) grabbed only 26 votes out of a total of 1,40,767 votes while the electoral performance of the ‘revolution trumpeting party’ in NA-144 was equally abysmal. The aspirants managed to clinch only 101 votes.

The PAT secured only 127 votes from both seats out of the total 4,57,137 registered voters in NA-144 and PP-147. Its candidate withdrew in favour of PTI in NA-122.

Political observers said the poor electoral performance by the PAT at its home ground gives credence to the perception of that the strength of Dr Tahir comes from his followers. “He can pull his specific followers to protest rallies only. He does not enjoy a vote bank at all,” Ijaz Ahmed, Professor of International Relations University of Peshawar said.

Last year, followers of Dr Qadri, most of them women and children, camped outside the Parliament House in the federal capital demanding Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to quit.

His followers had scaled the boundary walls of Parliament House and pitched their tents for weeks before they were requested to retreat to their earlier protest venue at D-Chowk.

The results of by-polls show that the PAT’s score is the lowest made by any political party in the by-election with less known independent candidates having scored better compared to the aspirants of the religious party.

“But he is magical leader. He can pull crowd instantly whenever he desires,” Prof Ijaz added.

The PAT has already said that it would actively participate in the upcoming Local Government (LG) polls in Punjab.
