LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has expressed his extreme displeasure over the illegal sites for the disposal of solid waste in Lahore and other cities of Punjab.

Strongly reprimanding the authorities of concerned departments and agencies yesterday, the chief minister ordered indiscriminate action against the elements causing diseases to the people through throwing of garbage on the impermissible sites.

He was addressing a meeting through video link at Civil Secretariat, here, which reviewed the measures for the elimination of illegal sites for disposal of solid waste in Lahore and other cities of Punjab.

The CM was much angered to know about the continued disposal of garbage by illegal sites in Lahore and other cities while the concerned departments and agencies remained ignorant and paid no attention to their responsibilities. He regretted that the housing schemes and cooperative societies also dumped garbage at these sites while concerned institutions paid no attention.

Shahbaz Sharif asked the concerned officers whether it was not their responsibility to take immediate notice of such sites. Upon receiving no satisfactory answer, he strongly reprimanded the authorities.

“The illegal sites for dumping waste are breeding places for diseases and their immediate elimination is the responsibility of the concerned institutions. Elimination of these sites is essential for providing a healthy environment to the masses and concerned departments must have to work on priority basis in this regard,” the CM stated.

He issued instructions for setting up of a committee for determining lack of coordination between concerned departments and institutions and directed that the committee should submit its final report within three days.

Shahbaz Sharif further directed that land should be identified for new sites for disposal of solid waste in proper manner and if there is any lacuna in the law regarding action against the elements disposing garbage at these sites should immediately be removed.
