ISLAMABAD Federal Minister for Sports Mir Aijaz Hussain Jakhrani ensured former Olympians that the ministry would look into the constitutions of the Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) and the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) before taking action against the office bearers of sports federations. He was talking to reporters here at PSB after meeting with president PHF Qasim Zia and former Olympians Islauddin, Shahnaz Sheikh and Shahbaz Ahmed Senior. Our aim was to sit and discuss the promotion of the national game,he added. Jakharni said that Qasim Zia and his team did well for the promotion of game and Pakistan improved their ranking at Asia level reaching second spot from 6th position. However, the former Olympians were not ready to step back from their demand of removal of secretary PHF Mohammad Asif Bajwa. Qasim is determined to follow the constitution of the federation, he said. The Minister further said that there were only two ways of removing Bajwa from the PHF resignation or a no-confidence vote in the PHF Congress. However, ministry will view the constitution of the hockey federation. We are democratic and we will not take any step against the constitution, he added. Asif Bajwa is not my relative and my aim is to improve the standard of the game in the country. The system should be transparent. I am not compelled to take any action but I will ensure that no breach of constitution is practiced. However, it is quite clear that hockey affairs will not get better with sacking of a single man, he viewed. President PHF Qasim Zia said that he had sent home the people responsible for the World Cup debacle. Asif had also been dismissed from the post of team manager. I will not violate the constitution of the PHF and I have no powers to dismiss or suspend the Secretary, he said. While answering a question regarding the removal of Khalid Mehmood in the past, Qasim Zia said that Khalid had resigned from his post on the request of his president Mir Zafarullah Khan Jamali. Now I have now powers to take action against Asif Bajwa. The Congress can remove him through no confidence, he added. Zia further said that he was willing to receive suggestions from the former Olympians. Most of the former Olympian are not ready to share their experiences with PHF till the removal of Asif Bajwa which is very sad. However, Shahnaz Sheikh has sent eight suggestions and we implemented all of them, he said. Islahuddin questioned the argument that president PHF and Federal Minister for Sports could not take action against the secretary PHF saying both had the powers to send him home. He also waved the constitutions copies of the PSB and the PHF and said that these constitutions allow both Qasim Zia and Sports Minister to take action against Bajwa. I am not candidate for any post of PHF, he said. Over 100 Olympians are disappointed over poor performance of the world cup 2010. We got last position in the 12-nation mega event and Asif Bajwa alone was performing all the duties including coaching and management. He had also free hand but could not deliver. He should go back home, he demanded. Islah further said that former players always gave suggestions to the federation for the promotion of hockey. Bajwa is not capable of running the affairs of the PHF and president has powers to remove him, he said. In the past, four secretaries of PHF had been sacked including Brig Atif Hussain, Brig Mussarrat Ullah Khan, Col Mudassar Asgher and Khalid Mehmood. All these the four resigned on the request of their presidents, he added. Shahnaz Sheikh and Shahbaz Ahmed Senior were also present on this occasion.
