ISLAMABAD - After taking strict action against Sheikh Afzal, the main accused in Bank of Punjab scam, it seems that the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) has given clean chit to the influential co-accused of Haris Steel Mills case including Federal Minister for Law and Justice, Babar Awan. Khwaja Haris, the counsel of the BoP, said that how could the NAB take action against a lawyer (Babar Awan) under whose Ministry the NAB was operating, while Raja Amir, NAB prosecutor stated that the Bureau was an independent body and action would be taken against culprits. Sheikh Riaz, owner of Haris Steel Mills, earlier had apprised the Supreme Court of Pakistan regarding details of BoP looted assets. As per his statement he gave before SC, Babar Awan, former attorney general Malik Qayyum, former president SCBA Aitizaz Ahsan, Senator Wasim Sajjad, former commissioner Islamabad Fazeel Asghar and others influential persons received hefty amount to assist him and to get favourable decision from the court. The bench also directed NAB to recover money from those lawyers, who get benefits in the Haris Steel Mills case. Aftab, Investigating Officer NAB, said, after recording the statement of Ravit Sami, Afzals confidant, that they would take action against those lawyers as well. But counsel of the BoP, Khawaja Haris, apprised the apex court that accused Babar Awan later become the Federal Minister, therefore, the NAB was reluctant to proceed independent inquiry against him and other influential persons.
