President immunity: Article 248 challenged in SC

Article 248 of the constitution, under which President Asif Ali Zardari enjoys immunity, has been challenged in the Supreme Court. On Wednesday Leader of Pakistan Communist Party , Engineer Jamil filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging the Article 248 of the Constitution. The petitioner adopted the stance that the article 248 should be interpreted. He argued that the President does not enjoy immunity in corruption cases internationally or domestic and the president enjoys immunity under article 248 only in criminals cases and that is also conditional. The petition also terms the immunity of president as in conformation with the Islamic provisions of the constitution. The petitioner requested the court that the Accountability courts should be instructed to reopen corruption cases against President Zardari without any delay.
