LAHORE - Qaumi Tajar Ittehad Punjab has threatened the government of shutter-down strike across the province if crackdown on the Ferozpur Road traders allegedly being carried out under the cover of extending the road, is not stopped with immediate effect. Chairman of the Ittehad Mian Akbar Rasheed and Finance Secretary Sheikh Habib Ahmad said that traders may lodge shutter-down strike soon if government does not stop economic killing of the traders and shopkeepers in the name of extension of Ferozpur Road. They said the hundreds of traders and shopkeepers staged protest demonstration on Ferozpur Road on Tuesday to get the administration stopped from going ahead with its drive to demolish shops and other commercial buildings on the road without any cogent reason. Addressing the protesters, Mian Akbar Rasheed urged Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif to take serious notice of the extension of the Ferozpur Road at the cost of livelihood of the poor traders and that the government should take the traders into confidence through the consultation process regarding extension of the Ferozpur Road. He alleged the anti-government bureaucracy is working against the government and the policies of some officers inclusive Commissioner Lahore and DCO Lahore might enhance the traders and shopkeepers hatred against the successful Punjab government. He added the city administration wanted to render the shopkeepers unemployed by pulling down their shops but the traders would not bear this bad act of the bureaucracy, as they would not allow anyone to remove the folders of the shops. It may be mentioned here that the city administration is undertaking a drive on the Ferozpur Road against the illegal encroachment upon the public land as a matter of creating more space for the road.
