In Pakistan there is no dearth of ignorant people who think that the polio vaccines provided by the World Health Organisation is not for the benefit of Pakistani children and can only be harmful to them. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Such people have been misled by some of our religious clerics who are opposed to the polio vaccination campaign out of ignorance.

The government should take stern action against such elements and make a greater effort to make people aware of the dangers of polio, and why it is critical for Pakistan to eradicate this disease which, apart from disabling a patient, can even be fatal. Meanwhile, enlightened clerics should prove the ignorant ones wrong by presenting persuasive arguments in favor of the anti-polio campaign. They should give this vaccination to their own children and prove once and for all that there is no harm in taking the medicine.
