MINCHINABAD

The family of a minor girl, who was raped by a landlord’s son, protested against the police for not arresting the influential accused, and threatened to hold protest in front of the Nation Assembly if justice not provided.

"We will also take the girl along and will stay there till justice is done," said the mother and, uncles of the victim at The Nation’s sub-office.

They said accused Hameed, 22, son of a landlord, allegedly raped the 7-year-old daughter of a labourer when she was returning from fields on March 20. The accused thrashed and torn her clothes when she resisted. As the girl raised a hue and cry, the family members reached the spot; the accused then escaped after threatening to kill her, they added.

In the meantime, one of the villagers called Rescue 15 and the police reached the spot. The cops recorded the statement of the girl and other eyewitnesses. They collected her blood stained clothes from the spot and after investigation registered a case against the culprit. Even then, the accused was still at large and police were not arresting him ‘after receiving heavy bribe’, they alleged.

They said that a Panchayat in which police personal including SHO and the investigation officer were also present declared the suspect guilty, but the police are still avoiding arresting him. They further said that they were being threatened with dire consequences not only by the accused and his family but also by the SHO and the investigation officer if she pursues the case.

"We are poor and powerless people. We went to the police station but no one heard our pleas because the accused are landlords and powerful. We also visited one police officer after another but no arrest was made,” the victim’s family further said.

One of the Panchayat (village council) member namely Tanveer Ahmed confirmed the statement of victim’s family. “The elders of the area were summoned to Panchayats and the suspect Hameed confessed to his crime but police are not taking appropriate action against him even elapsing of 22 days of incident,” he revealed.

Minchinabad Bar Association(MBA) Secretary General Ahmed Hasan Chisti and other advocates strongly condemned the shameful act and urged the higher authorities to take stern action against the accused. They also offered free legal assistance to the victim.
