LAHORE - Senior PPP leader Qamar Zaman Kaira has said that 12-14 hours of loadshedding still continues in the rural areas contrary to the government’s claims of surplus electricity in the country.

“15000 MW of electricity was available in the system during last tenure of the PPP government. Now Shehbaz Sharif claims his party’s government has added another 8000 MW, but there is no respite from loadshedding which is even worst in the rural areas”, he observed while addressing a news conference here.

Starting from April 20, Kaira announced to start a protest movement across Punjab to agitate the issue of power outages .

n Lahore, the PPP will hold a protest demonstration on April 27 to expose the government’s false claims on availability of electricity, he added.

Commenting on Friday’s court verdict on life-long disqualification of Mian Nawaz Sharif, the PPP leader said it won’t be possible for the PML-N to run an anti-judiciary campaign this time.

“Mian Nawaz Sharif had attacked the Supreme Court in the past, but now he would not be able to repeat his previous performance in the fast changing political scenario.”, he said, adding, he was hearing that Adiala jail was being cleaned to receive a new inmate.

“Whatever is happening to Mian Nawaz Sharif is taking place under his party’s government and on the behest of his younger brother Shehbaz Sharif”, he alleged.

Replying to a question, Kaira said it was not correct to draw parallels between Z.A Bhutto, Shaheed BB and Mian Nawaz Sharif, stating that the PPP leaders had rendered great sacrifices for democracy unlike the PML-N leader who had always conspired against the elected governments.

Talking about the SC verdict against Nawaz Sharif, PPP’s central Punjab Secretary General Ch Manzoor said that PPP had in the past asked Mian Nawaz Sharif several times to repeal the controversial Articles introduced by Gen. Zia.  “But he had rejected our suggestion every time thinking these Articles would never be applied against him”, Manzoor said.

He further stated that though the PPP did not support such decisions, but it was Mian Nawaz Sharif himself who adopted the course of judiciary instead of strengthening the Parliament.

Also, local PML-N leader from Manga Mandi,Rana Jamil Manj and Hamza Shehbaz’s former coordinator Malik Asghar Ali announced to join the PPP at the Press conference.
