RAWALPINDI - The pre-arrest bails of Ali Musa Gilani and Makhdoon Shihabuddin, Federal Minster for Textile Industries, in Ephedrine smuggling case were extended till August 27 by the Lahore High Court (LHC) Rawalpindi Bench here on Monday.

The judges were told that Shah Khawar advocate, counsel for former Health Minister Shihabuddin, could not appear before the court because of his engagements in the Supreme Court; therefore, the hearing should be postponed.

Dr Khalid Ranjha, the counsel of ex-PM Yousuf Raza Gilani’s son Musa Gilani, said that he had no objection in deferring the hearing till August 27. He added that since two accused were involved in this case their bail pleas should be heard together. Anti Narcotics Force (ANF) Special Prosecutor Wasim Ahmed objected that the bail pleas had been pending before the court for too long.

Giving a big blow to both the accused, former Health Director General Dr Rasheed Jumma, in his statement as approver, had accused Gilani and Shihabuddin for pressing him to allot the 9,000kg quota of Ephedrine for local use in 2010.

Danas Pharma Islamabad and Berlex Pharma Multan were given the quota of huge quantities of Ephedrine and the manufacturers did not keep the record of consumption of the controlled chemical.
