ISLAMABAD - PSB Deputy Director General Agha Amjedullah said Pakistan Sports Board (PSB) would organise different sports events today (Wednesday) to mark the Independence Day.  In an exclusive interview with The Nation on Tuesday, Agha said: “Hockey, football and kabbadi competitions will be held besides other indoor games. If weather permits, we have planned number of events, but in case of rain, we have decided to organise only indoor games.”

“Hockey match will be played between top national female players at Naseer Bunda Hockey Stadium. Fortunately, female hockey camp is currently underway at Naseer Bunda Stadium and we have decided to take full advantage of the top national female players’ presence and hold a hockey match between the female players. Football match will be held at Jinnah Stadium while the kabbadi match will also be held at Jinnah Stadium in which top national players will be seen in action,” he added.

“The indoor swimming pool, which was closed during the Ramazan for renovation work, will also be inaugurated next week. After the completion of renovation, we have installed latest tiles and also constructed new washrooms inside the swimming pool which will certainly add to the beauty of the pool and provide much-needed extra facilities to the top national athletes and also armatures,” Agha stated.

He said the renovation and construction work of the outer pool had entered final phase and it would be ready by the next week and would be inaugurated with the holding of Inter-Punjab Games swimming competition. “It took almost three to four months to complete the tiling work and we have installed world class tiles in the swimming pool. The pool was expected to be reopened by the end of June but due to shortage and non-availability of the desired tiles, a delay of almost two months was witnessed. Although the contractor has taken extra time, but we are very pleased with the installation work as the tiles add extra beauty to the pool,” he added. “This pool was closed for competitive action for the last five to six years, but with the active interest of Director General PSB Syed Amir Hamza Gilani, this long standing issue is finally resolved and this pool will hold international standard competitions just like it did in the past. We have done our part of work and now it's up to the federation whenever they decide to hold any kind of events. We are more than ready to provide them with best facilities,” Agha concluded.
