KARACHI - In the wake of current monsoon season, the Sindh government has declared rain emergency in Karachi Municipal Corporation, Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KW&SB) and other associated departments to ensure timely drain of stagnant rainwater from the streets. 

Sindh Local Government Minister Owais Muzaffar has also directed the KMC Administrator, KW&SB MD, Municipal Commissioner and Director Municipal Services to personally monitor the situation and make their presence available on ground to ensure proper drainage of rainwater.

He also directed for utilising all available machinery and equipment for ensuring the same.

After chairing a meeting, he warned if stagnant rainwater is found anywhere on the streets, the concerned officers/officials would be taken to task. He also directed KW&SB MD to establish his camp office in Civic Centre for better cooperation with the KMC.

He further directed the KMC administrator to ensure proper cleanliness of big drains for smooth flow of rainwater. He said he would personally visit various city areas so as to inspect draining of rainwater. No slackness would be tolerated in this regard, he further added.

Meanwhile, Sindh Chief Secretary Ejaz Chaudhry has advised the administrators of KMC and all the five District Municipal Corporations of Karachi to immediately abandon the garbage dumping sites in Malir and Lyari Rivers and ensure strategic plan for adequate solid waste management.

He also instructed the authorities of the KMC to restart cleanliness of all Nullahs (sewerage lines), storm water drains and remain alert round the clock.

He also advised the KMC authorities to monitor the rain relief work and cancelled the leaves of the officers and personnel of DMC Malir.

During the meeting, the irrigation secretary was asked to strictly monitor the work and duties of the engineering staff members of the Irrigation Department.

The Sindh chief secretary categorically noted that in view of the past experience, strategic efforts must be undertaken to sufficiently overcome the post downpour difficulties.

He also advised the Local Government secretary to supply clean drinking water to Saadi Town and other areas of the city at the latest. The chief secretary also suggested the commissioner Karachi to ensure all out efforts by all departments concerned to successful implementation on flood/rain emergency plans. The deputy commissioners or commissioner should not express helplessness in performing their duties.
