LAHORE - Pakistani shooter Ghulam Mustafa Bashir is out of the Olympics medal race as he finished 18th among 26 shooters yesterday in the men’s 25m rapid fire pistol event.

Bashir scored 287 points in the first stage to finish at the 17th spot on Friday, while he had 284 points after the second stage to finish with a combined score of 571. Germany’s Christian Reitz finished at the top with 592 points and Cuba’s Leuris Pupo was the sixth to qualify with 583 points. The 28-year-old was unable to equal his national record of 578 points.

National athlete Mehboob Ali also faced first round exit when he finished sixth in the Heat 2 of the 400m featuring eight athletes. Mehboob completed the distance in 48.37 seconds in the Heat which was won by Bralon Taplin of Grenada with a time of 45.15 seconds. 29 athletes moved to next round after seven heats of the event with 45.91 seconds cut-off time.

Earlier on Friday night, Pakistan’s top swimmer Lianna Swan finished 64th out of 88 swimmers that took part in the 50m freestyle heats of the swimming competitions. As many as 91 swimmers were set to feature but two did not start and one was disqualified. Lianna, who had entered the spectacle with a qualifying time of 28.66, even finished behind that time by clocking 29.02. She ended last in her heat in which seven swimmers competed after one from Armenia did not start.  Earlier, Swimmer Haris Bandey had finished at the last number out of 50 participants in 400m men’s freestyle competitions while shooter Minhal Sohail had finished 28th among 51 participants in the 10m air rifle women qualification stage and Judoka Shah Hussain Shah lost to Bloshenko Artem of Ukrain in the minus 100 kilogramme competitions round of 32.

The only remaining Pakistani athlete in the competition, Najima Parveen will compete in the 200m race on August 15.
