Imam killed, man critically wounded in Queens shooting: Police

An imam was killed and another man was hospitalized in critical condition after both were shot in the head while walking in Queens, according to witnesses and authorities.

The shootings occurred about two blocks from the Al-Furqan Jame Masjid mosque in the Ozone Park neighborhood.

A preliminary investigation indicates that a lone gunman shot the two men during a robbery, two police sources told NBC 4 New York.

Police responded to reports of the shooting at 2 p.m. Saturday in Ozone Park. The two victims, found on 79th Street, were taken to Elmhurst Hospital Center, police said.

One of the victims, an imam, succumbed to the gunshot wound, witnesses said.

Authorities say the two men, who are in their 50s, may have been targeted.

Shiv Kadar, 28, was in his living room on 80th Street when her heard the shots, he told NBC 4 New York.

"I heard probably five shots," Kadar said. "I told my dad and he said 'it's probably fire crackers.'

Kadar said the shots sounded like they came from the corner of 80th Street and 101 Avenue, near where the A train stops.

He saw one victim on the ground being treated by first responders. "They were giving him CPR," Kadar said.

Further details were not immediately available.
