LAHORE - The nation is set to celebrate Independence Day today with great enthusiasm and zeal and pledge to make all out efforts for the peace, prosperity and development of the country, amid elaborate security arrangements.

In addition to strict security at different venues, mobile phones will remain switched off from 6am to 12 at noon to avoid any untoward incident.

Special prayers will be offered for integrity, solidarity, and development of the country at mosques across the country.

The official festivities start with the raising of the national flag on the Parliament House and the Presidency followed by a 31-gun salute in the federal capital. The similar events will be arranged at provincial assemblies and government offices in all the federating units followed by a 21-gun salute.

President Mamnoon Hussain will hoist the national flag and address the nation at the main event at Convention Center Islamabad.

Change of Guards will be held at the mausoleums of the Quaid-e-Azam in Karachi, and national poet Allama Iqbal in Lahore.

Government and private institutions including schools, colleges and universities have planned different functions and seminars to mark the day.

At the start of the ongoing month, special stalls and shops were set up across the country for the sale of national flags, buntings, posters and pictures of national heroes. Major public and private buildings, streets and avenues have been illuminated and decorated with national flags, banners and buntings.
