LAHORE - On the accusation of 5-hour illegal detention of Punjab University professor, PU Registrar Dr Naeem has clarified that professor Dr Nasir Ahmed, director of the institute of geology in Punjab University was neither detained nor investigated by Police. "The police personnel talked to concerned professor just to exchange information and seek his guidance to reach the culprit involved in December 2 firing incident which injured two students of the university," he said this while talking to The Nation here on Saturday. He said that Punjab University administration had always honoured the teachers and never compromised over their prestige. Similarly, "We have always prioritised the security and safety of students and will never compromise on it." However, he said the university and all the other institutions were bound under the law to cooperate the law enforcement agencies to hunt down the outlaws. "Allowing police to have a talk with Prof Nasir to trace the accused is not an act to humiliate him," he added. He said everywhere in the world, government officials, ministers and others dignitaries are arrested and detained. Police interrogate them under the law." Meanwhile, when contacted the on duty-police officer at the Muslim Town police station, said that they had asked Prof Nasir to appear before the investigators. "He was released after some interrogation regarding the whereabouts of his son-in-law who is involved in Punjab University firing incident," he added. Jamaat-e-Islami has strongly condemned the treatment meted out to concerned professor. It said that the police act amounted to harass Prof Dr Nasir Ahmad at the behest of PU vice chancellor. He said that the VC, Registrar and RO acted as B team during the era of dictatorship in past and now they were playing havoc with the prestige of university under the umbrella of Punjab governor.
