LAHORE - Punjab Chief Minister, Mian Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif has said that provision of better transport facilities to the people is in his top priorities and measures are being finalized for this purpose. He also gave formal approval to set-up Lahore Transport Company for solving transport problems being faced by the citizens and making transport system as an effective and regular system. He stated this while presiding over a high level meeting held to review provision of better transport facilities to the people at Chief Minister's Secretariat here on Saturday. Members Provincial Assembly Mohsin Latif, Irfan Daha, Chairman Task Force on Transport Tasneem Noorani, Additional Chief Secretary, Secretaries of Transport, Finance, Schools, Director General LDA, DCO Lahore, concerned officers and experts were also present on the occasion. The Chief Minister said that quality transport was being ensured for providing better transport facilities to the citizens and a special task force had also been constituted in this regard so that an effective transport system could be evolved. He said that no further delay should be made in provision of transport facilities to the citizens and measures be taken for immediate purchase of locally made buses. He said that government will also encourage operators of private sector in this regard and will provide subsidy to them for plying their buses. Lauding the services of Task Force on Transport, he said that a comprehensive plan has been evolved to provide better transport facilities to the masses. He said that Lahore Transport Company should be run as a regulatory authority and professionals be included in its board of directors. He directed that the transport company should be registered as early as possible and the office of the company should be set up in Ichhra Depot situated at Ferozepur Road, but first of all purchase of buses should be ensured and purchase order should be issued within 24 hours. He said that effective measures would be taken for the improvement of traffic system in the city and a meeting of concerned departments shall soon be convened. Earlier, Chairman Task Force Tasneem Noorani informed the meeting about the details regarding establishment of Lahore Transport Company. He said that Board of the company would comprise nine directors out of which four would be selected from private sector. He said that besides determination of route planning and fares, the company would also ensure solution to other problems. He also informed about other important points regarding establishment of company. The participants also informed about their proposals regarding formation of Lahore Transport Company.
