Pakistan is currently facing serious energy crisis and power shortages, which are likely to considerably escalate in the near future. The crisis, if left un-addressed, would badly affect the industrial and economic growth of the country. All coal producing countries in the world including Germany, USA, UK, Australia, China, India and many east European countries have a very large share of lignite in their mix of power generation. Furthermore, gas produced as a result of coal-gasification is an excellent fuel. Coal is also used extensively in the steel industry. The prospects of producing gas from cheap coal in Pakistan are remarkably bright as we have one of the largest coal reserves of the world in Thar. We should appreciate efforts of the Sindh government with regard to developing the Thar coal. Energy produced by this resource can brighten the future of our country and activate industrial growth. -QAZI ABDUL WAHEED, Karachi, December 10.
