Allies are 'killers': Mirza

KARACHI The political alliance between the PPP and the MQM is again facing disintegration after Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza claimed on Monday that 26 out of 60 persons, arrested on target killing charges, belonged to the second biggest party of Sindh. All sensitive law enforcement agencies have conducted investigations of the arrested persons and proved that 26 of them belonged to the second largest party of the province, the Sindh Home Minister disclosed this while addressing members of Karachi Chamber of Commerce and Industry at the Chambers auditorium here on Monday. The minister said when the MQM leader Dr Imran Farooq was killed in London, the shops and markets were closed in Karachi and buses and mini-buses of Pathans were set on fire and some members of the Pathan community were killed and the blame of the target killings was put on ANP President Asfandyar Wali. Without naming anyone, he said that one had to search to kill a Pathan, Sindhi or Balochi and added if these ethnic groups come face to face they would retaliate automatic weapons and innocent Urdu speaking people would be killed. Addressing the audience, the Home Minister said that when they vote in favour of a party in the city, they should ask that party to maintain law and order in the metropolis. Mirza said that the maintenance of law and order in Sindh has also been the equal responsibility of the two coalition partners, but they do not want to accept it. I accept the responsibility of what is happening in Karachi, Mirza said, adding that people cast votes to extortionists, they should talk with these elected representatives for law and order, he maintained. I never said that foreign hands are involved in the target killings, we are all doing it ourselves, he added. He said that every political party active in the city was responsible for the target killings. Mirza said that the traders of Karachi give maximum donations to the outlawed outfits, he added. The seed of hatred that had been sown has to be rooted out, he stressed. Earlier, on behalf of the members, former President KCCI Siraj Kassim Teli told the Home Minister that the city business community contribute 68 of the revenue and it was their right to have maintain law and order in the metropolis which is essential for working of the business. He said when people arrested for any crime and when they are shown on TV channels, their faces remained covered and requested the minister that faces of such people should be shown to general public. Another businessman Junaid Ismail Makda complained that some extortionists come in Shehzore truck and forcibly get their CNG tank filled from several gas stations. Meanwhile, the MQM sharply reacted to Mirzas remarks and demanded of President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani to take serious notice of what they said provocative speech of the Sindh Home Minister. After an emergency joint meeting of Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rabita Committee, at London and Karachi, expressed deep concern over Mirzas remarks. The meeting discussed in detail the provocative speech made by the Home Minister, and decided that a delegation of MQM would meet President Asif Zardari and Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gillani after Muharram and give them the DVD of the speech and convey them MQMs concerns. It was observed in the meeting that at a time when the members of the MQM Rabita Committee, elected representatives and office-bearers of MQM were busy in promoting unity among the Muslims and religious harmony in connection with maintaining peace during the month of Muharram, the speech made by the Provincial Home Minister is a cause of concern and not without reason. The meeting demanded of President Zardari and Prime Minister Gilani to take serious notice of what they said provocative speech of the Home Minister and ask him to explain his position. The Rabita Committee has asked the elected representatives and office-bearers of the party not to be provoked by the statement of the Home Minister and continue working for maintaining peace during Muharram. They condemned the remarks of Sindh Home Minister Dr Zulfikar Mirza.
