ISLAMABAD - President Pakistan Tennis Federation (PTF) Syed Kalim Imam while addressing a press conference here at PTF Tennis Complex Islamabad on Monday said there was need to promote tennis at grassroots level in the country and we are taking guidance from the past greats to help prepare a four-year plan in this regard. He said that Pakistan tennis sensation Asiam-ul-Haq would play an exhibition tennis match against his doubles partner Indias Rohan Bhopana in Lahore on December 26. We will continue all the result-oriented policies of the previous office-bearers of the Federation. To make sure the participation of national players in the international events we are talking to the multinationals for the sponsorship of these players, he added. Syed Dilawar Abbas, ex-president PTF, Col (R) Asif Dar, Caltex Chevron Policy Manager Syed Amjed Shabbir, Subh-e-Nau Chairperson Shahida Kausar, Ex Davis Cupper Hamid-ul-Haq, Zulfiqar Rahim, PTF Finance Secretary Arif Qureshi and a large number of tennis stars were also present on the occasion. Kalim Imam said that PTF would soon organise a get-together in honour of the outgoing PTF officials and newly-elected members of PTF. We will hold a series of meetings with the administration of the university, colleges, schools, Higher Education Commission and Inter-Board Chairman in this regard to hold annual tennis events in their respective organisations. To promote tennis at grassroots level PTF will take on board professionals from across the country to help raise the standard of tennis, he said. Senior sports journalists guidance was essential to bring revolutionary changes in the present tennis set-up, Imam said. Replying to a question he said PTF had got $500 in the balance from the outgoing federation, Pakistan Sports Board has released a sum of Rs1.2 million instalment of the annual grant and we are talking to the sponsors and I am hopeful their will be no shortage of funds for the Federation. We will restart the School Tennis Initiative Programme. We will arrange the technical courses under the foreign coaches. PTF will hold the Caltex-Chevron Pakistan Open Tennis Championship from December 25 to December 31 at Dilawar Abbas PTF Complex Islamabad. The championship will be played in 5 categories: Mens singles, mens doubles, ladies singles, juniors under-18 and boys under-14.
