ISLAMABAD - Pakistan Medical and Dental Council (PMDC) has recommended the health ministry to close three medical colleges for failing to meet the set standards by the council.

Hashmat Medical & Dental College, Gujarat, AL-Razi Medical College, Peshawar, and Sahiwal Medical College, Sahiwal, have been recommended to the ministry of national health services, regulation and coordination for closure by the PM&DC.  The PMDC executive committee meeting held recently took this decision, as these colleges did not meet the minimum standards of PMDC criteria for recognition of medical and dental institutions.

Officials said the students of these three colleges would be adjusted in other colleges while the students who take admissions in already declared unrecognised colleges or those stopped from admissions by the Council would have no fate. The Council gives advertisements time to time and mentions on the PMDC website too the names of unregistered or those stopped from admissions medical and dental colleges to make aware students and their parents. The students and their parents should check the status of the college before admissions so that their time and money do not go into waste, they maintained.

The committee also disapproved the dental section of Bacha Khan Medical College, Mardan, for recognition due to shortage of facilities and deficiencies. Similarly, the colleges including Federal Medical & Dental College, Islamabad, Pak Red Crescent Medical & Dental College, Lahore, Mohiuddin Islamic Medical College, Mirpur (AJK), Abbottabad International Medical College, Abbottabad, Independent Medical College, Faisalabad, Women Medical College, Abbottabad, Muhammad Bin Qasim Dental & Medical College, Karachi, Bhittai Medical & Dental College, Mirpurkhas Sindh have also been directed to stop their admissions for 2013-14 due to lack of facilities and other deficiencies.  While discussing the issues of the students who are studying In Cuba, the Committee decided that they will have to appear in the PMDC National Examination Board Examination (NEB) in order to get registered in Pakistan as medical and dental practitioners.
