Remembering Aunty Shamim

History is full of examples when the mighty of the land collapse like sand castles with the triggering of one single incident. General Ayub's rule ended in 1969 when people took to the streets when the price of 1 kg sugar was increased by 1 rupee. Similarly the French revolution began with the storming of prison of Bastille and the freeing of the captives. If we look at the fall of General Pervaiz Musharaf, it was not the sacking of the Chief Justice which resulted in his downfall, as is the common belief, but it was the wrath of Aunty Shamim which triggered the subsequent events and his ultimate departure from the corridors of power for good.
Aunty Shamim, as known to many, is someone forgotten in the pages of history despite having immense potential and vision which led to the downfall of the all powerful dictator. Had she not orchestrated her abduction at the hands of the Jamia Hafsa students, the Lal Masjid operation would not have been launched. More importantly, the fate of the General would have been totally different. We owe our gratitude to this lady for being instrumental in bringing down a dictatorial regime and help bring democracy to the country.
Aunty Shamim was kidnapped by the Jamia Hafsa students in June, 2007 and made to announce that she would stop her “pious” business immediately.  In captivity of the moral brigade and under extremely difficult circumstances, she was made to repent her crimes. Being intelligent women, she accepted all the allegations and got herself free from the clutches of her tormentors. Once freed, she used her contacts and on 10th of July 2007, the Lal Masjid (Red Mosque) operation was carried out by the Government against clerics and students of Lal Masjid.
Musharaf was not alone to suffer the wrath of the lady; the site of Moulana Abdul Aziz wearing a Burqa to escape from the Lal Masjid compound also owes its roots to the prayers of Aunty Shamim who was forcibly made to wear a burqa despite this being against the norms of her profession. Never play with the fire, as they say.
The whereabouts of the respected lady are unknown since the Lal Masjid incident but it is rumored that she was offered huge amounts of money to keep her mouth shut by the mighty of the country who were utilizing her institutional services for the attainment of ultimate Nirvana. It is reported that the influx of "influential" people to the hospitals to check for the heart ailments increased exponentially when it was reported that a bundle of visiting cards were recovered from the custody of the enterprising lady. After all, preserving one's morality is the prime obligation towards one's family.
Some also claim that she was given immigration as a Highly Skilled Worker in a western country where she has continued to run her business which is thriving with every passing day. According to some estimates, she is among the top expatriates sending foreign exchange to our country through legal channels; thus helping the country of her origin. Noble act indeed!
As business women, she was also providing job opportunities to many widows who had no one to take care of them. Having knocked at the doors of the Government fruitlessly, these women turned to her and she was kind enough to provide them with bread and butter and a cushy life style.
She religiously believed in the concepts of equality, hence her business was open to all and sundry in a respectable sector of Islamabad from 9 am to 2 pm; thus giving ample time to her staff to spend some quality time with their families. Realizing the economic condition of our country, only Sunday used to be a closed day and due deference was paid to Friday as the business was closed by noon.
No business, may it be legal or illegal, can be conducted in the land of the pure without the full protection of our police force. She ensured that regular payments are made to the officials so that the poor policemen can feed their families. This shows her care for the white colored Government officials who are finding it hard to make both ends meet and relay on the compassion of women like Aunty Shamim. According to some very reliable sources, 35 per cent of the money earned by her went to the poor police officials. In other words, they were acting like being her second-in-command.
It is really surprising that till date no Presidential award has been bestowed upon her for her exemplary work. If we look at the list of recipients of the awards every year, no one can be more deserving than her. It is Auntie’s like her who can pull the strings at the top and control our ruling elite when no constitution or law works.  Aunty Shamim once showed her resolve to write a book promising divine revelations. The author of this piece offers her his services for free to come up with a classic book which for sure can win “Man Bookers Prize”.
