ISLAMABAD-Former Pakistan cricket team captain Zaheer Abbas has said that Pakistan has realistic chance of inflicting defeat on Kangaroos at their own backyard, as both situation and conditions are with them.

Talking to The Nation, former ICC president Zaheer said: “Present Australian team lack experience and depth in batting and also in bowling, unlike of past, when they used to have world class batsmen and the best bowling attacks. Now they just have skipper Smith, Warner and Usman Khawaja, while Starc is the only specialist genuine pacer. Pakistan team can take advantage and rewrite history books.

“Aamir, Wahab can devastate any given batting order on Australian tracks, which offer assistance to pace bowlers. Wahab is a genuine fast bowler and can bowl express deliveries, while I think Yasir Shah can also be secret weapon for Pakistan. With Younus, Misbah, Azhar Ali and Asad Shafiq in the team, I feel Pakistan should bat well and post a decent score, while Pakistani bowling is more than capable of bowling out Aussies twice,” he added.

Speaking about Pakistan team’s performance against Kiwis, the former ICC president said that although the green caps couldn’t perform well against New Zealand, yet the series was over and now Pakistan must look forward and come over that purple patch. “Pakistan team was very much in the match in the second Test after being outclassed in the first one, as the openers gave a very solid start to their run chase, but after surviving anxious moments and negotiating early spell well, Pakistan team tried to win the match, which didn’t work and they just threw away wickets.

“Misbah’s absence was another major factor, as the skipper and leader always produced wonders for the country and team. New Zealand wickets also supported the hosts and their style of play, while Pakistani bowlers failed to utilise conditions according to their strength,” he added.

He said the national team was now fully strengthened with the arrival of skipper Misbah, who knew how to lead the team and utilise his options accordingly. “Australian tracks best suit to Pakistani bowlers as well, unlike of Kiwis tracks, where the fast bowlers were almost hapless. Australian tracks offer bounce, pace and swing, for which Pakistani bowlers are specialized for.”

The former captain said: “I was quite surprised to watch our pacers bowling wayward deliveries and just wasting the new ball. Aamir is a world class bowler and I am sure he will be at his best again, while Yasir Shah, I believe, is a bowler for any kind of surface and bound to excel. “I don’t know what was wrong with him as he looked completely off-coloured against Black Caps. The batsmen must apply and try to spend more and more time at the crease. The head coach must also work with the players and try to convey the very simple message about rotating the strike, as our batsmen always fail to rotate strike, which result in frustration,” he added.

“Pakistan team has to play sensibly as well as with greater responsibility if they want to win the series, otherwise, leniency and casual approach can cost them the series. I hope Misbah and company will deliver and try to win the series,” Zaheer concluded.
