The top government health official in Sri Lanka's northern war zone says 40 civilians are killed every day and more than 100 others wounded in the fight between government troops and Tamil Tiger rebels. Dr. Thurairajah Varatharajah said on Friday that the makeshift hospital he is running out of a school in the coastal town of Putumattalan is overwhelmed by the casualties. Most of his doctors and nurses have fled the war zone and the facility is running out of some essential medicines. Varatharajah said civilians in the area had been suffering heavy casualties for three to four weeks.
