Loadshedding in winter for several hours a day, a number of times a day, is mainly because of the greedy owners of powerhouses. Or may be, it is a conspiracy hatched by the civil servants and elements of establishment opposed to democracy. One shudders to think of what the plight of businesses and industries would be in summer and how much that would add to the rising unemployment. We all know that the theft of electricity in this country is as high as 45 % since the last several decades. No government worth its salt can hope to sustain itself with out solving this problem now. Increasing power rates by ending the subsidy in these circumstances would be tantamount to punishing the law-abiding citizens. -ARIF N. KHAN, via e-mail, January 27.
