LAHORE - So-called Taliban have entered the province through the porous border dividing Balochistan and Punjab, while the Elite Force is being sent for plugging the divide till the Border Military Force is active to its full capacity. Provincial Minister Law and Parliamentary Affairs Rana Sana Ullah Khan told this to the Punjab Assembly here on Monday, while initiating general discussion on law and order situation in the province. While mentioning that the debate was started on Opposition's demand, Rana Sana said the terrorists infiltrated into the Punjab areas through borders with Balochistan and South Waziristan Agency. "There were intelligence reports that terror activities could take place during Moharram-ul-Harram, and especially after the Mumbai blasts, RAW could disrupt the law and order situation, but the Punjab Police ensured foolproof security to the masses single-handedly without asking any support from army or Rangers, though the latter ones were also on red-alert," he maintained, while appreciating the police department, which was further lauded by the desk thumping of the MPAs. "Pre-emptive measures, Chief Minister's vision, and continuous monitoring by the IGP and Home Secretary actualised the goal," he added. Rana Sana said in the post-Dera Ghazi Khan blast meetings, Shahbaz Sharif had constituted a committee, which prepared a detailed report. "In the light of this report, effective measures are being put in order to check the terrorist elements on the borders. The Elite Force and well-equipped police personnel will be deputed on the border after they will have been given special training. In this connection, the relevant department has been directed to withdraw the Elite Force from protocol duties," he said, adding that the government was pondering over different lines for capacity building of the police department. "It is also being considered to raise the salaries of the policemen, while having zero tolerance against the corrupt and incompetent police officials," he averred. He told the House that officers from the Regional Police Officer to the SHO concerned were dismissed after the DG Khan blast. "We are appointing competent RPOs, DPOs and the DCOs, and CM Punjab is himself interviewing them. Secondly, the government is seeking suggestions from the Police Department to improve the Thana culture," he said With regard to checking of wheat and flour smuggling, Rana Sana said the law enforcement agencies had arrested 3,127 accused and registered 2,041 cases. "In a massive crack down, 487 fertilizer hoarders were arrested, while 458 cases had been filed and more than 100,000 kilogram of Urea was recovered," he said, adding that the police had also apprehended 707 groups of land grabbers and 16,088 gamblers. Opposition member Muhammad Yar Hiraj, while launching a bitter diatribe against the government, said an MPA was looted and blasts took place within 100 meters of the Punjab Assembly. "How can this government maintain law and order in rest of the Punjab?" he quizzed. Hiraj was of the opinion that two systems - of Secretariat and Committee - were being run parallel. Another opposition member Mohsin Khan Leghari said that Border Military Police should be revamped on modern lines and all vacancies must be filled. Major (r) Abdur Rehman Rana, Sana Ullah Khan Mastikhel also spoke. Ever-adamant Ahmed Hassan Dehr was speaking when the Chair adjourned the session for Monday (February 16) at 3 pm. The debate will restart on Tuesday.
