ISLAMABAD - A Full Court meeting was held on Wednesday in the Supreme Court of Pakistan, Islamabad, under the chairmanship of Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry to pay tribute to Justice Tariq Pervaiz, who is going to lay down the robes of office on Thursday.

The meeting also took stock of the performance of the Supreme Court in terms of dispensation of justice and disposal of cases for redressal of grievances of public litigant.

Praising the services of Justice Tariq Parvez for judiciary, rule of law and supremacy of the Constitution, the CJP said that the brother Judge worked hard to perform his Constitutional duties over and above his personal interest, he did his job with full commitment, dedication and honesty. The Chief Justice paid glowing tributes to the outstanding legal career of Justice Tariq Parvez both as a lawyer and as a judge. The meeting examined the statistics of institution and disposal of cases in the last three months from November 12, 2012 to February 08, 2013. From November 12, 2012 to February 08, 2013 total 4,502 cases were instituted and 6,136 were disposed of. Several benches were constituted in principal seat in Islamabad and branch registries in Lahore, Karachi, Peshawar and Quetta. In Islamabad 1,501 cases instituted and 1,741 disposed of, while in branch registry Lahore institution cases were 2,281 and 3,613 were disposed of. Similarly, in Karachi 207 cases instituted and 216 disposed of, while in Peshawar 374 instituted during this period and 514 disposed of and in Quetta registry 139 instituted and 52 disposed of.

The full court discussed different ways and means to clear the backlog/pendency and it was mutually agreed that as tentative strategy at least two benches at Lahore and one at Peshawar may continue further to diminish the backlog in order to provide speedy justice to litigants as well as public at large.
