LAHORE – An injury time goal by M Hameed helped Pakistan hold Maldives 1-1 in the first match of a two-match friendly football series at Male on Wednesday. The home team was enjoying 1-0 lead close to the end of the play but their dreams of a narrow win were shattered by a last-minute goal by Pakistan’s Hameed, said the information made available here. Assadullah Abdullah of Maldives scored in the 48th minute but the last kick of the game came to the Pakistan rescue. Pakistani side missed a series of chances which came across their way. In the 11th minute, Hassan Bashir’s superb shot went wide outside the box. In the 20th minute, a corner kick by Samar Ishaq was misplaced by Faisal Iqbal and the chance was lost. In the 27th minute, Hassan penetrated into the defence line of Maldives and sent a good pass to Kaleem Ullah who fumbled the chance. In a counter move, Maldives made a good attempt which was foiled by goalkeeper Jaffar Khan. In the 48th minute Asadullah produced a goal through a header. In the last five minutes, the game became tensed and Pakistan were desperate to score a goal to equalise the match. In 90+2 minute Pakistan achieved in securing a goal from corner. Ejaz passed to Hameed who did not miss the golden opportunity by converting it into a goal. Pakistan National team coach Zavisa praised his boys for their effort throughout the game. “Pakistani team played a very competitive match. We performed well and I am very satisfied with the motivation and aggression of the players.” The second international friendly game between both the sides will be played today (Thursday) at the National Stadium Male, Maldives.
