LAHORE - Punjab government has decided to give practical shape, without any delay, to the project of giving the status of autonomous chartered university in the name of Baba Farid University to Sahiwal sub-campus of Bahauddin Zakria University and setting up of University of Okara on 280 acres land at Renala Khurd.

An amount of Rs100 million out of ADP of the province was being released for both these projects costing one billion rupees, under first phase.

This was decided at a meeting of a special committee constituted by the chief minister and presided over by Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan here on Friday. MNA Muhammad Arif Chaudhary and Sahiwal Division Commissioner Suhail Shahzad as well as senior officers of Education Department attended the meeting.

The meeting decided that Baba Farid University Sahiwal and University of Okara both would be generalised universities. The government has allocated 280 acres land for University of Okara at Renala Khurd which includes the land allocated for Renala sub-campus of University of Education and its adjacent land.

The meeting also decided to immediately start the construction work on both these project as on-going scheme. Punjab Chief Minister Muhammad Shahbaz Sharif will formally inaugurate the construction work of University of Okara.

Meanwhile, in another meeting presided over by Education Minister Rana Mashhood Ahmed Khan, arrangements for holding a function regarding distribution of merit certificates signed by the chief minister and cash prizes to the teachers and 404 male and female talented students getting first, second and third positions in matriculation and intermediate examinations during 2014 were reviewed. This function will be held on Friday, February 20 in Lahore in the evening whereas full dress rehearsal will be held on February 19.
